Community Arts Partnership (CAP) is calling for artists from a variety of artistic backgrounds to facilitate our community arts workshop programme across Northern Ireland.

We are looking for creative, dynamic and innovative practitioners with an approachable attitude, a passion for community arts, and experience of working on arts projects in community and school settings.

Applications should be submitted no later than 5pm Tuesday 2 July to Peggy Fisher via email peggy@comartspartner.org or in the post to Community Arts Partnership, 3-5 Commercial Court, Belfast BT1 2NB.

CAP has been delivering very successful community arts workshop programmes for over 10 years. With this year’s programme, we wish to renew our commitment to championing community arts and promote access to and participation in the arts to all sections of society.

Between July 2013 and March 2014 we will be offering poetry workshops to schools and writers’ groups. We will also deliver a wide range of participant-led projects to community groups, including film, photography, animation, fashion, sculpture, textile art, carnival arts, crafts, dance, drama, music, and mural making.

Community Arts Partnership is currently supporting and promoting interculturalism in the arts (through our InterCultural Arts Support Programme and within the framework of  the Arts Council of Northern Ireland’s Intercultural Strategy). We are keen to hear from artists from or working with ethnic minorities who are interested in facilitating intercultural creative projects engaging diverse communities.

Rich Tapestries to be created for Community Weaving Project

As part of the City of Culture celebrations and events, an exciting community weaving project – The Big Weave will see the creation of seven new tapestries in a three-week period in June which will then be donated to the city as part of the legacy of 2013 particularly appropriate given the history, both ancient and modern, of textile industry in the city. Having commenced on Monday of this week, the Big Weave is open until 29 June.

St Augustine’s Church on the historic Derry~Londonderry walls is behind the project which it sees as the perfect way to embrace culture and the dual themes of Columba and the walls.Three looms have been brought to the St Augustine’s church hall to create the tapestries – although they will be taken out into the city during the three weeks to help in the creation of truly citywide pieces of artwork.

Six of the tapestries will be presented to different organisations which all share strong connections to the church or the city. They are: St Columb’s Cathedral, The Long Tower, The Apprentice Boys, First Derry Presbyterian Church, Derry City Council and The Honourable The Irish Society. The project will be based at St Augustine’s church. Mondays to Saturdays you will find the volunteers weaving, either in St Augustine’ Halls or, as weather permits, outside on the walls. On Wednesdays they will wander off with one of the looms, over the Peace Bridge and into Ebrington Square, where they will set up camp for the day.

Everyone is welcome and encouraged to join in – absolutely no experience necessary. St Augustine’s Church is situated in Palace Street, Derry~Londonderry.
